Phase II of Saucon Rail Trail to Move Forward in 2013
By the end of 2013, trail users will be able to enjoy a new section of the Saucon Rail Trail. Upper Saucon Township will construct Phase II of the Saucon Rail Trail, completing the
2-mile section of trail between the Upper Saucon Township Community Park on Preston Lane and Southern Lehigh Living Memorial Park in Coopersburg Borough.
Phase II will be a further extension of the existing 5-mile trail constructed in 2011 as part of Phase I. When Phase II is completed, the Saucon Rail Trail will stretch 7 miles from Hellertown Borough to Coopersburg Borough, through Lower Saucon Township and Upper Saucon Township. The Saucon Rail Trail receives heavy use, and is enjoyed by walkers, runners, and bikers of all ages.
Phase II became a reality when Upper Saucon Township received grant funds from both the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources (DCNR) and Lehigh County. The Lehigh County Green Futures Fund awarded $232,000 to the Township to complete the remaining 2-mile section of the Saucon Rail Trail from the Upper Saucon Township Community Park to Southern Lehigh Living Memorial Park. The grant from DCNR for $32,500 will cover improvements to the trails at the Upper Saucon Township Community Park in order to link Phases I and II together.
Upper Saucon Township is extremely grateful to the Lehigh County Commissioners and DCNR for these grant funds, and thanks all those who voiced their support of the grant applications. Investing in local recreation projects is a great benefit to residents in the region, as it promotes healthy lifestyles and a safe and convenient way for walkers, runners, and bikers to visit local destinations. We hope to see you on the Trail.

PPL Vegetation Management
Recently, PPL has embarked on a vegetation management project along high-voltage transmission lines in the area. They have reached out to local municipalities in an effort to provide information to residents regarding the project. Below are some of PPL's reasons for doing this work:
- It is critical that we maintain the reliability of our electric transmission system.
- PPL Electric Utilities is required to meet federal reliability standards on certain high-voltage lines.
- Transmission vegetation management work is required so we can keep the lights on for homes and businesses throughout the region.
- We understand this work can cause concern for some individual landowners, and we are sensitive to that. Our first priority has to be reliable electric service for millions of people in this region. We are always willing to meet with property owners to hear their concerns and discuss the work we need to do to keep our lines safe and reliable.
- Our increased vegetation management activity is already paying dividends for customers in terms of maintaining a reliable electric system.
- We take very seriously our obligation to keep our part of the nation's power grid reliable.
For more information on this project, you may view this document, or visit PPL's website.
